Exploring St. George’s Future: New Homes and Community Projects

News

St. George is at a pivotal moment in its growth story. At the recent town meeting, community members, local officials, and developers gathered to discuss plans that will shape the village for decades to come. The conversation centered on balancing progress with preserving the charm and heritage that make St. George unique.

With opening remarks from Heidi with a little update on what we have been working on.

Looking Ahead: Tree Lighting Celebration Mark your calendars! Next week, we’ll gather for St. George’s annual Tree Lighting Ceremony.

This event is more than just a festive evening; it’s a celebration of community spirit and togetherness. Bring your family, friends, and holiday cheer as we kick off the season in style.

To guide us through this evening, we are pleased to have John MacAlphine as our Master of Ceremonies. John will be introducing some of the key voices behind St. George’s development.

Jennifer Kyle talking about the Mock Council.

Grade 6 Students Take the Council Chambers

As part of their civic studies curriculum, a local Grade 6 class had the unique opportunity to step into the shoes of County Council for the evening. This hands-on experience gave students a chance to understand how decisions are made and why community voices matter.

The students debated and voted on a variety of topics—some imaginative, others very real. Proposals included:

  • Turning a school into a trampoline park (Proposed by Councilor Oakley ). The students voted No to turning the school into a trampoline park.
  • A new apartment building development, where students asked thoughtful questions like: “Why can this building only be six floors and not eight? Wouldn’t that allow more families to have homes?”
  • Backyard chickens, where the class voted to amend the current limit from six to ten hens, arguing that larger families need more eggs.

This exercise wasn’t just fun—it sparked meaningful conversations about growth, housing, and sustainability. It showed how civic engagement begins with curiosity and a willingness to ask questions.

Speaker - Brandon Kortleve

Brandon from the Planning policy department of the County of Brant. Came up to stage to explain the locations of the development and the phases.

St. George is going to gain 1600 homes, spread out from now until 2051.  The development will not be like Paris.

Looking at the growth map.

  1. Brant Star developer, Will build 65 homes to finish that development, this project has been approved and is in the allocation of the current water treatment.
  2. Greentown Cider Park, will build 80-90 units.
  3. Pinevest main street, will build a mix of 70 units with some that have the first floor as commercial.
  4. Losani homes- Will be the first Phase of the major development of St. George. Starting at the old Milk plant ( Across from the school)
  5.  Pinevest Loveless project will be west of the city on the Loveless farm. This will bring 150 units for this project and will also bring the first round about into the town. This will help control the traffic from the west.
  6. Pinevest Riverview Highlands, this project is on the south side of that round about. It will connect to the Losani homes project to the south. This project is planning for 100 units.
  7. Empire homes will bring 800 homes but will one of the last projects to build.
  8. Stremma will bring 395 units to the golf course.

Some things that was mentioned. As each phase is completed there will be a study on traffic and other Infrastucture to make sure we are still able to have a good traffic flow.

The County will keep doing these studies as the province has said they will not be installing lights at German school and 24 or Howell road and 24.

Speaker - Kathy Ballantyne, Director of Facilities and Special projects.

Kathy had a great presentation on the current details of each development project at the current time. All of these developments are due to change as each phase could change policies for St. George.

There are plans for a big park North of Hwy 5 and also by the proposed location of a school or 2 in the south end. As Kathy stated the County is saving land for the school board to put a school there but in the end it up to the school board and the province, to build the school.

There is also a planned 2.5km trail from the north end of St. George to the south with many paths through nature.

Closer look at the current project plans, that are connected to the phased development.
